S&P puts Honduras in Creditwatch negative after coup

NEW YORK, June 30 | Tue Jun 30, 2009 3:43pm EDT

NEW YORK, June 30 (Reuters) - Standard & Poor's on Tuesday placed Honduras' "B-plus" credit rating on CreditWatch negative to reflect the damaging economic impact of the rise in political uncertainty following a military coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya.

"This political crisis comes at a time of economic contraction domestically and abroad, weakening the government's ability to adjust fiscal and monetary policies on a timely basis to maintain external liquidity and access to markets," S&P said in a statement.

S&P placed Honduras' "B-plus" long-term and "B" short-term foreign- and local-currency sovereign credit ratings on CreditWatch with negative implications. (Reporting by Manuela Badawy; Editing by Dan Grebler)
