EMSI's Expertise Employed for Sustainable Design

WASHINGTON, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Environmental Market Solutions, Inc.
(EMSI), an environmental and green building consulting company, provided
sustainable design and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
certification consulting to Founding Farmers, the first upscale-casual,
full-service restaurant to be awarded LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED CI)
Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). EMSI is part
of Carrier Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Founding Farmers, an 8,500 square foot restaurant in downtown Washington, DC,
received LEED Gold certification in recognition of the restaurant's high
standards for energy and environmental performance. "EMSI was honored to
participate in the design of Founding Farmers," commented Ken Langer,
president, EMSI. "It is always a privilege to support organizations committed
to environmentally conscious building solutions."

According to the USGBC, the project has achieved a number of "firsts" in the
retail food service industry, including being the first restaurant in
Washington, DC to be awarded LEED certification and the first full-service,
upscale-casual restaurant in the country to earn LEED Gold.

EMSI worked with the design team and developer to maximize energy efficiency,
reduce water usage, reclaim materials and increase indoor air quality. "The
project achieved a high level of energy performance through energy efficient
water source heat pumps, and over 80 percent of the appliances are Energy Star
rated," said Langer. "We also incorporated into the design an energy efficient
lighting system that exceeds ASHRAE 90.1 lighting power standards by 10
percent through the use of light emitting diode (LED) and low voltage lamps.
Reclaimed brick and heart-of-pine wood were used for the flooring, and
elements of an old barn door form portions of the interior walls."

Founding Farmers has gained attention not only because of its sustainable
design, but also because it represents a unique concept in farm-to-table
dining. Owned by a collective of over 40,000 family farmers, the restaurant
sources most of its produce and other food products locally from within the
Mid-Atlantic region.

According to Founding Farmers General Manager Christian Holmes, the green
design and operational features of the restaurant generate considerable
interest from customers. "Our guests want to know about our LEED design and
the other ways that we're green. It's a great opportunity for us to educate
them and help spread the word about all the different ways we're contributing
to sustainability, including through our farm-sourced menu and our day-to-day
green operations."

Kelly Romano, president, Carrier Building Systems and Services added,
"Founding Farmers is another example of Carrier's commitment to providing
innovative and sustainable solutions to increase energy efficiency and
environmental performance for commercial buildings."
