TOPIC: On a recent Early Show on CBS-TV, resident veterinarian Dr. Debbye Turner
Bell took a look at the problem of families who have been forced to give up
their pets after losing a job or a home. Shelters are struggling to keep up:
According to Petfinder.com, 84 percent of shelters and rescue groups all over
the United States are reporting pet surrenders due to the bad economy. Making
matters worse is the fact that shelters are not only running out of space but
have suffered their own financial reversals. The only "silver lining" in this
cloud is that many more of these shelter animals than usual are healthy and well
socialized, making them very adoptable. Dr. Bell commented that someone who is
having difficulty affording food and medical care for their pets can sometimes
get assistance.
