AOL appoints Bebo chief as head of ad sales Europe

LONDON, July 8 (Reuters) - AOL, the web-services business being divested by Time Warner Inc (TWX.N), appointed the European head of its social network Bebo to a new position in charge of AOL's advertising sales in Europe.

The executive, Kate Burns, will report directly to AOL's global advertising and strategy president, Jeff Levick, and will continue to run Bebo's European operations while she settles into her new role, AOL said on Wednesday. No successor to Burns at Bebo was announced.

AOL Chief Executive Tim Armstrong, a former Google Inc (GOOG.O) executive who took over at AOL in March, is conducting a 100-day review of the company's operations and is expected to present a strategy for the business later this month.

Time Warner is separating AOL, which has struggled in the wake of the slow decline of its Internet access business, as an independent, publicly traded company. It is considering spinning it off to Time Warner shareholders.

Armstrong is believed to want to simplify AOL's multiple brands. Wednesday's press release made no mention by name of its advertising platform, Platform-A.

Brendan Condon, the managing director of Platform-A's non-U.S. business, will return to his native New York to assume a new role that has yet to be decided.

Burns -- a former manager at media conglomerate News International (NWSA.O), web search company AltaVista and Internet advertising company DoubleClick -- will be in charge of ad sales for AOL's third-party ad platform Advertising.com as well as publishing sites that AOL owns or operates.

Like Armstrong and Levick, she also has a history at Google, having joined as its first employee outside the United States in 2001 as director of UK, Ireland and Benelux. (Reporting by Georgina Prodhan; editing by John Wallace)
