THEALE, UNITED KINGDOM, Jul 07 (MARKET WIRE) --
Data sharing initiatives for Law Enforcement Agencies, such as the UK's
Police National Database (PND) are on the increase and with it the
upgrading of the protective markings of that data from 'restricted' to
'confidential.' At Staffordshire Police, this data still needs to be
accessible from all county locations and therefore requires the
reclassification of their entire network, including WAN and LAN, to a
'confidential' level. Apani EpiForce is one of the cornerstone internal
solutions used in achieving this level.

Staffordshire Police employs approximately 4,500 people, with police
officers accounting for more than half of this figure, and serves a
population of more than one million across an area of approximately one
thousand square miles. The challenge presented to Phil Lovell, head of
technology services for the Staffordshire Police force, was to ensure that
the force is fully compliant and prepared to access and utilise the new
PND in 2010. Specifically, the mandate is for all communications to the
extensive PND to be encrypted and with segmentation between 'restricted'
and 'confidential' areas. With a network made up of 2,300 workstations and
more than 350 servers the solution had to be reliable, flexible,
unobtrusive to deploy and easy to maintain.

After examining the Force's business processes, reviewing existing
alternative technologies and interviewing key end users of existing
confidential level systems, Staffordshire selected Apani's EpiForce
solution due to its inherently high levels of flexibility and efficiency,
which cannot be found in typical network security solutions. Moreover,
EpiForce adds identity-based access control and encryption to create an
identity-aware network that enforces security policy based on the identity
of the connected user.

"Security of data is a key element of inspiring and maintaining the trust
of the communities we serve and thus is a very high priority for us,"
noted Lovell. "EpiForce, once it has achieved FIPS 140-2 accreditation
which it is currently undertaking, will enable us to achieve IL4
certification on top of an IL3 accredited network at a fraction of the
cost of alternative solutions. EpiForce has the added benefits of being
unobtrusive to deploy and flexible enough to address business challenges
for the Force as they come up in the future."

In addition to meeting regulatory requirements for the PND, EpiForce has
armed Staffordshire Police with a comprehensive solution that enables
computer assets to be physically or virtually relocated without requiring
major system modifications. EpiForce also provides Staffordshire Police
with access control that eliminates the need for traditional, inflexible
hardware-based appliances. In addition, EpiForce enabled Staffordshire
Police to reconnect more than 50 non-networked 'digital evidence'
computers to centralized anti-virus servers, without exposing broader
network vulnerabilities. EpiForce offered a centrally controlled,
efficient solution that eliminated manual updates for anti-virus software
to each machine individually. This alone saved Lovell's team the time and
cost of one full man-year. Finally, EpiForce could be deployed
transparently and independent of other technologies including Citrix,
VMware and their existing infrastructure.

"Software solutions are easier to maintain than hardware options, and
EpiForce has helped Staffordshire Police simply and seamlessly achieve the
requirements needed to comply with national regulatory requirements,
positioning the Force to address future business challenges," said Graham
Morris, Apani managing director for Europe. "The success of the
Staffordshire Police implementation is one example of the flexibility
inherent in EpiForce and we're pleased that we could support the business
needs of the Staffordshire Police to achieve 'confidential' certification
status."

EpiForce delivered the Staffordshire Police several major benefits within
a single security solution that enables an identity-aware network without
requiring network readdressing or reconfigurations, eliminating countless
hours of maintenance to support new security initiatives. EpiForce is a
software-based alternative to using network firewalls and VLANs for
security inside the corporate network and can be installed, deployed and
configured on top of existing network infrastructure without requiring
changes to the infrastructure.

    About Apani

Apani(R) is the preeminent provider of identity-aware network solutions
for large enterprises, protecting an organization's internal network and
business-critical data from intruders.

Apani EpiForce(R), the company's flagship product, allows an organization
to create an identity-aware network that protects data and network
communications by isolating users, servers, clients, and mission-critical
data into security zones, regardless of system platform or physical
location. EpiForce uses the identity of the user to control access to
security zones and selectively encrypt traffic between users and machines
on the network.

EpiForce provides flexibility and efficiency not available with
traditional network security solutions. Based on software, EpiForce is a
distributed, centrally-managed solution that is transparent to users,
applications and infrastructure -- making it quicker to deploy and less
costly to manage than any hardware-centric solution. Policy enforced by
EpiForce is persistent, enabling protected resources to be relocated
without compromising security.

Working to provide an evolutionary improvement in efficiency, flexibility,
manageability, and total costs of ownership, Apani technology is used by
many of the largest companies in the world.

Based in Southern California, Apani was founded in 2003 and is privately
held. More information about the company may be found at www.apani.com.
