TOKYO, July 8, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ)
(Nasdaq:IIJI) (TSE1:3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and
comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the construction of a
streaming distribution system-with technological cooperation from Microsoft Co.,
Ltd., and using Microsoft's next-generation live broadcasting technology, Live
Smooth Streaming(1) -for the live broadcast of the keynote speech at Microsoft's
ReMIX Tokyo 09 event to be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009.
This will be the first time that Live Smooth Streaming is used in Japan to

Live Broadcast from ReMIX Tokyo 09: time and URL
Broadcast date and time: Thursday July 16, 2009, 10:00 to 11:40 a.m.

Live Smooth Streaming represents the application of the Smooth Streaming video
distribution technology to live broadcasting and offers audiences the best
possible media viewing experience. Smooth Streaming, Microsoft's IIS 7(2) Media

and adapts stream quality to match the viewer's client environment (connection
speed, CPU performance, etc.). Microsoft(r) Silverlight(tm)(3), which users
install on their Web browsers, provides features that were not available in
earlier live broadcasts: The "instant replay" feature enables viewers to go back
and replay highlights of the broadcast, and "catch-up replay" enables viewers
who come late to the broadcast to go back and play the entire broadcast from the
beginning.
U.S.-based Inlet Technologies is providing the latest HD live encoder, Spinnaker
7000.
As broadband access spreads, more and more people are downloading movies, music,
and other rich media, and the need for rich content distribution is increasing.
IIJ has always worked to provide solutions to meet market demand, such as for
the distribution of high-definition TV and high-volume downloads. IIJ is also
answering the demand for streaming distribution for Silverlight by introducing
Live Smooth Streaming content distribution technology.
"The ReMIX Tokyo 09 live broadcast will be the first time that Live Smooth
Streaming is used in Japan," said Akihiko Oba, General Manager of Developer &
Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Co., Ltd. "Viewers will be able to experience the
latest HD video distribution technology for the first time, which makes this an
important opportunity for us to demonstrate the quality of our technology.
Through our technological cooperation with IIJ, a company with a proven track
record as a pioneer in the field of streaming distribution, we hope to expand
the content distribution market for Silverlight."
Notes
1 Live Smooth Streaming: The live broadcast version of Microsoft's
Smooth Streaming HD streaming distribution technology. It was
provided as an extended function of IIS 7.
2 IIS 7 (Internet Information Services 7.0): Microsoft's Web server
software. Comes standard with Windows server products.
3 Silverlight: A plug-in for Microsoft's Web browser. This plug-in

achievement of optimum video distribution development for both service providers
