EU: slim chance of rapid decision on Lufthansa/AUA

BRUSSELS, July 10 | Fri Jul 10, 2009 6:27am EDT

BRUSSELS, July 10 (Reuters) - European Union antitrust regulators said on Friday they were unlikely to decide this month on Lufthansa's (LHAG.DE) plan to buy Austrian Airlines (AUA) AUAV.VI despite an informal offer of revised remedies from the German carrier.

"Unless there is a miracle, we will not be in a position to take a decision by the end of this month," European Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd told a daily briefing.

Lufthansa has said it can walk away from the planned AUA deal if it does not get the green light by July 31. The EU executive is now reviewing the proposed takeover, with the deadline for a decision set for Nov. 6. (Reporting by Foo Yun Chee)
