TIMELINE: Hotels targeted in deadly attacks and bombings

July 17 - Six people were killed in nearly simultaneous bomb blasts at the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton hotels in central Jakarta on Friday, Indonesian police said.

It is the second time in six years the Marriott has been targeted, after a car bomb killed 12 people in 2003. That attack was blamed on Islamic militants.

Following is a timeline showing hotel attacks since the Indonesian capital's last hotel bombing, many of which have been in Asia. Aug 5, 2003 - INDONESIA: Bomb outside JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta kills 12 people, including a Dutchman, and wounds 150. Jemaah Islamiah militant group is blamed.

Aug 19 - IRAQ: At least 22 people killed and 150 wounded in the bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad's Canal Hotel.

October 7, 2004 - EGYPT: Bombings at the Taba Hilton hotel on Egypt's border with Israel and two beaches further south kill 34 people.

July 23, 2005 - EGYPT: Two car bombs and a suitcase bomb rip through hotels and shopping areas in Sharm el-Sheikh, killing at least 64 and wounding more than 200, including some foreigners.

Jan 14, 2008 - AFGHANISTAN: Six people are killed in a suspected Taliban suicide attack on the five-star Serena Hotel in central Kabul.

Sept 20 - PAKISTAN: Fifty-three people are killed in a suicide bomb attack on the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan's capital Islamabad. More than 260 are wounded, most of the victims are Pakistanis in the attack on the hotel, part of a U.S.-based chain and a favorite haunt of diplomats and wealthy Pakistanis.

Nov 26-29 - INDIA: Islamist militants in Mumbai attack two luxury hotels, taking dozens hostage at the Taj Mahal and Trident/Oberoi hotels. The bold and bloody city siege targets several other prominent landmarks, killing 166 people. Nine of the 10 gunmen, said to be linked to Pakistan-based Laskhar-e-Taiba militant group, are also killed.

June 9, 2009 - PAKISTAN: A suicide bomb attack on Peshawar's top hotel kills at least seven people, including two U.N. workers, a Russian man and Philippine woman, at the Pearl Continental, a hotel popular with VIPs and foreigners in the capital of the North West Frontier Province.

July 17 - INDONESIA: Bombs explode at the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels in Jakarta, killing at least six people.
