LOS ANGELES, July 24 (Reuters) - Coffee chain Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O) plans to enter India within two years, a spokeswoman said on Friday.
The Seattle-based company, however, has not started selecting cafe sites or setting up a local unit, spokeswoman May Kulthol told Reuters.
The company had previously said it planned to enter India within two years, Kulthol said.
The Japanese business daily Nikkei reported earlier on Friday that Starbucks had already started selecting cafe sites and setting up a local unit. That report cited an interview with Starbucks Chief Financial Officer Troy Alstead.
India has a growing middle class and many U.S. companies are targeting it for international growth.
Starbucks shares were trading down 13 cents, or less than 1 percent, at $17.13 in midday trade on the Nasdaq. (Reporting by Lisa Baertlein, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
