Three soldiers killed in al Qaeda clash in Yemen

SANAA, July 31 (Reuters) - Three soldiers were killed in an armed clash with militants belonging to al Qaeda in north eastern Yemen on Thursday evening, a Yemeni government source told Reuters.

The fighting took place in Marib province, which lies east of the country's capital, Sanaa.

Yemen, one of the poorest Arab countries, has been battling a wave of al Qaeda attacks, as well as a Shi'ite Muslim rebellion in the north and rising secessionist sentiment in the south. The violence has raised Western fears that it could become a new haven for Islamic militants.
