UPDATE 1-Washington Post reports profit; ad revenue falls

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - The Washington Post Co (WPO.N) swung to a quarterly profit and revenue rose in the second quarter because of its education and cable television units, while advertising revenue at its namesake newspaper fell 20 percent.

Second-quarter net income was $11.4 million, or $1.30 per share, compared with a loss of $2.7 million, or 31 cents a share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 2 percent to $1.13 billion. Newspaper publishing unit revenue fell 14 percent to $168.8 million, and print ad revenue at the Post fell 20 percent to $80 million.

The company reported several charges, including $35.2 million after taxes for buyouts at The Washington Post. (Reporting by Robert MacMillan; editing by John Wallace)
