ROME (Reuters) - An understrength United States failed to qualify for the final of the women's 4x100 meters medley relay at the world swimming championships on Saturday.

Elizabeth Pelton, Kasey Carlson, Christine Magnuson and Julia Smith could only finish 10th overall after a generally slow set of heats.

The U.S. had been silver medalists in the event at the last four world championships.

China qualified quickest for Saturday's final in three minutes 56.14 with defending champions Australia only sneaking through in seventh.
