U.S. House panel OKs health reform overhaul bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A key U.S. House of Representatives panel on Friday backed sweeping legislation overhauling the nation's healthcare system that would allow for a public health insurance plan, generic biologic drugs and other significant changes.

Democrats, who hold the majority, overcame differences with more fiscally conservative party members to approve the measure in a 31-28 vote mostly along party lines in the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The bill's passage comes just as lawmakers prepare for a month-long break. The legislation could still face a number of changes when it comes before the full House for a final vote.

Committee Chairman Rep. Henry Waxman said as many as 60 amendments must still be considered when Congress returns in September.
