UPDATE 1-Electronic Arts seeks smaller acquisitions
* Not interested in large-scale, packaged goods deals
* Interested in deals in certain regions
* Said EA was under-represented in Asia
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Video game publisher Electronic Arts ERTS.O said on Tuesday it continues to look at smaller-scale acquisitions, and expressed little interest in a blockbuster deal.
The publisher of the "Madden" football video games, named for the former National Football League player, coach and sportscaster John Madden, is interested in smaller opportunities in certain regions, Chief Financial Officer Eric Brown said at the Pacific Crest Technology Leadership Forum in Vail, Colorado.
He also said EA is "underweighted" in Asia relative to its global sales, but did not say whether the company was looking to buy anything there.
The company was interested in deals that would allow EA to buy franchises or online publishing technologies to move more into the consumer-to-consumer marketplace, Brown said.
Companies that fit into these categories generally have valuations or market caps of less than $1 billion, he said.
Electronic Arts has $1.8 billion in cash, equivalents and short-term investments. The company abandoned a hostile bid to buy smaller rival Take Two Interactive (TTWO.O) for roughly $2 billion last year.
"That's a deal whose timeframe has come and long gone. We're just not interested in a large-scale, traditional packaged-good publishing deal," Brown said.
Shares of Redwood City, California-based Electronic Arts fell 2.2 percent to $20.29 in early afternoon trading. (Reporting by Gabriel Madway. Editing by Robert MacMillan)
