Fire damage repair at UK Tilbury power plant ends Sept

LONDON Aug 12 (Reuters) - Repair work at Britain's Tilbury power station near London is expected to be completed in September, after fire damaged one of its turbines last month, plant operator RWE npower said.

"We can confirm that the damage resulting from the fire is restricted to one of the station's turbine generating units and a small area of the turbine house roof," a spokeswoman for the UK arm of German utility RWE (RWEG.DE), the owners, said.

"The station's other two operational turbine units remain available for use and we anticipate that repair work on the affected turbine and roof will be completed in September."

RWE npower said it was not expecting significant demand from Tilbury in the next few weeks and extra capacity was available elsewhere to compensate for shortfalls.

Staff were evacuated when a fire broke out at Tilbury on July 29, but power generation was not affected as the plant was off line for routine maintenance.

Tilbury coal-fired power station can generate up to 1,428 megawatts of electricity. (Reporting by Kwok W. Wan; editing by James Jukwey)
