CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(Business Wire)-- Modular Genetics, Inc. (Modular) announced today an addition to its Scientific Advisory Board. The company has appointed internationally recognized surfactant and colloid chemistry expert Dr. P. "Som" Somasundaran to its Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Somasundaran is La von Duddleson Krumb Professor, Director Langmuir Center for Colloids & Interfaces, Director National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Studies in Novel Surfactants at Columbia University. He is a recognized authority in the areas of surface and colloid chemistry, surfactants and polymers. Dr. Somasundaran was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1985, and has been elected to numerous other honorary societies, both in the U.S. and abroad. He has authored 15 books and over 600 scientific publications and patents. "Modular expects surfactants produced by fermentation of renewable raw materials to be among its first commercial products. Professors Somasundaran`s extensive experience in the analysis and formulation of surfactants is invaluable to Modular as the company advances toward commercialization of these "green" specialty chemicals." said Kevin Jarrell, President and CSO of Modular. "Today, nearly all surfactants are manufactured using either petrochemicals or seed oils, such as palm or coconut oil. Worldwide production of surfactants from petrochemicals emits atmospheric carbon dioxide equivalent to combustion of 3.6 billion gallons of gasoline. Production from seed oils is greener, but there is a limit to the amount of seed oil that can produced responsibly, while protecting the rainforest. To address this problem, Modular has developed microorganisms that convert agricultural waste material into useful new surfactants. I am delighted to work with Modular on the development of these new green surfactants." said Dr. Somasundaran. About Modular Genetics, Inc. Modular is a sustainable chemistry company focused on the development of engineered microorganisms that convert inexpensive renewable raw materials into high value chemical products. Modular`s mission is to use biotechnology to produce useful chemicals that are safe, environmentally friendly and manufactured responsibly. The company is located at 325 Vassar Street, Cambridge, MA 02139, and its telephone number is (617) 441-6000. COMMUNICATIONS: Modular Genetics, Inc.
