U.S. Ambassador to World Trade Organization Peter Allgeier Joins C&M
International
WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. Ambassador to the World
Trade Organization (WTO) and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Peter Allgeier
is joining C&M International, Ltd. (CMI), the international trade and
investment consulting firm affiliated with Crowell & Moring LLP. Allgeier will
become President of CMI effective September 8, 2009, working with longstanding
Chairman & CEO Doral Cooper. Allgeier joins CMI after nearly three decades at
the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), where he was a negotiator
on nearly every major U.S. trade initiative since the Carter Administration.

Allgeier has broad experience on a range of trade matters, including complex
international negotiations, trade and investment laws and regulations, WTO
agreements, bilateral investment treaties, free trade agreements (FTAs),
patents, trademarks and copyrights, government procurement, export subsidies,
and more. Since beginning his career at USTR in 1980, Allgeier has negotiated
more than 100 trade, investment, and intellectual property agreements with
countries throughout Asia, Europe (including the former Soviet Union), the
Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean. He has also led multilateral
negotiations in the WTO, its predecessor organization, the General Agreement
on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and the United Nations.

Allgeier was appointed to the position of Deputy USTR in 2001. In this role,
he led the critical U.S. negotiations that resulted in agreement by 146
countries to launch the current Doha round of global trade negotiations. Since
2005, Allgeier has served as U.S. Ambassador and Permanent Representative to
the WTO in Geneva. Under the Obama Administration, Allgeier served as Acting
USTR from January to March 2009. Allgeier also served previously as Assistant
USTR for Asia and the Pacific (1985-1989), Assistant USTR for Europe and the
Middle East (1989-1995), and Assistant USTR for the Western Hemisphere
(1995-2001). Prior to joining USTR, Allgeier was an international economist
with the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID).
Allgeier graduated cum laude from Brown University, with an A.B. in
international relations. He earned a Masters Degree in international relations
from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies
(SAIS), and a Ph.D. in international economics from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
