NEW YORK, NY, Aug 17 (MARKET WIRE) --
Their students may have taken the summer off, but 20 teachers who
received education grants from Fund for Teachers enrolled in Columbia
University to take part in the annual Teachers College Reading and
Writing Project (TCRWP). The premiere program exposed these teachers to
some of the best thinkers and teachers in the field of reading and
writing.
The TCRWP is a research and staff development organization housed at
Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. The Project's
weeklong Summer Institutes (the first two weeks of July and the middle two
weeks of August) serve as annual clarion calls to more than 3,500
teachers, coaches, and administrators dedicated to creating a school
community of life-long reading and writing enthusiasts. Sixty-five Fund
for Teachers Fellows joined the pilgrimage since 2001.
"Together as a team, we began to investigate ways we could improve our
language arts instruction," explained attendees from Los Angeles' Arroyo
West Elementary. "We wanted to be more effective teachers, but we also
wanted to breathe life and energy back into our language arts instruction
for ourselves and for our students. To give us the skills necessary to
more fully implement successful reading and writing programs in all our
classrooms, we began to dream about attending the Summer Institutes."
"Teachers have the power to transform the world through their direct,
daily contact with our future generations," said Karen Kovach Webb,
executive director of Fund for Teachers. "FFT is a very public display of
support for the vital functions that our committed public servants
perform."
Made possible by individual and corporate donors, Fund for Teachers has
awarded more than $12 million in grants to approximately 3,500 of
America's top educators over the past nine years. Based in Houston, Fund
for Teachers enriches the personal and professional growth of America's
top teachers as they identify and pursue opportunities around the world
that will have the greatest impact on themselves, their students and
their communities. This summer, 371 teachers closed their classroom doors
to embark on their own personal and professional development experiences
around the world. For more information on their destinations or how you
