Suit filed to protect Fraternity`s right to have freshmen live in Fraternity
Chapter House
CHICAGO--(Business Wire)--
The Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity Alumni Board today announced that it has filed
a lawsuit in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Chancery Division, seeking to
prevent the Illinois Institute of Technology from breaching a 1964 agreement
between the Fraternity and the IIT by prohibiting freshmen students from
residing in the Fraternity Chapter House.

The agreement between the parties, which has been in existence since 1964, gives
the Fraternity the right to designate students, including freshmen, it feels are
appropriate candidates to live in the Fraternity Chapter House. The agreement
prohibits IIT from unreasonably refusing to allow a designated student to live
in the Fraternity Chapter House, as long as the student is in good standing and
regularly enrolled in a department.

"The Fraternity believes the freshman year is the most difficult year for
students, and our ability to establish fraternal bonds between our brothers will
be irreparably harmed without having freshmen reside in the chapter house," said
Ricardo "Bear" Barragan, President of the Fraternity Alumni Board.

"Our agreement with IIT has been in existence for nearly 50 years, and there is
no reason for the unilateral change in housing policy at this juncture,"
Barragan concluded.

With its lawsuit, the Fraternity is seeking injunctive relief to prevent IIT
from breaching its agreement with the Fraternity by refusing to allow freshmen
students to reside in the Fraternity Chapter House during their first two
semesters as IIT students.
