CINCINNATI--(Business Wire)--
We're not sure if you've heard of a little government program called the Car
Allowance Rebate System (CARS), but it was a pretty big deal for the auto
industry this summer. More casually known as "cash for clunkers," the stimulus
effort allowed good, tax-paying U.S. citizens to swap out their gas-guzzling
automobiles in exchange for newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles -- along with a
$4,500 rebate from the feds for doing so. 

As a result of the program, car companies -- including Ford Motor Company (NYSE:
F) -- reported rising demand for their vehicles, and some announced plans to
ramp up production as a result. However, with CARS officially wrapping up this
past Monday, anxiety has reemerged among auto investors. Without the aid of a
federal stimulus, analysts are wondering, can U.S. automakers maintain their
positive momentum?
