Sept 1 (Reuters) - Hologic Inc (HOLX.O) said U.S. health regulators approved its MammoSite ML radiation therapy system for treatment of early-stage breast cancer, sending its shares up 4 percent after the bell.

Diagnostic test maker Hologic, which focuses on women health products, said it expects to commercially launch MammoSite ML during the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

The new device helps radiation oncologists treat patients who are otherwise not appropriate candidates for traditional brachytherapy, Hologic said in a statement.

Shares of the company were trading up 65 cents at $16.85 after the bell. They had closed at $16.20 Tuesday on the Nasdaq. (Reporting by Jennifer Robin Raj in Bangalore; Editing by Pradeep Kurup)
