Extra-early advance ticket sales orbit "New Moon"
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Fans of the vampire romance series "Twilight" already can secure movie tickets for the earliest performances of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," more than two months before the sequel opens.
Carmike Cinemas is offering tickets to midnight November 19 performances of the Summit Entertainment film at select theaters through Fandango. The Columbus, Ga.-based exhibitor -- which operates 247 theaters in small and midsize markets nationwide -- will offer "New Moon" tickets at 63 theaters listed on the online ticketer's Web site.
A Fandango spokesman said it was too early to track ticket sales from the initiative.
The unusually early sale of "New Moon" tickets follows AMC Entertainment's move to offer tickets to midnight performances of Jim Cameron's highly anticipated sci-fi action movie "Avatar" a full four months before the 20th Century Fox film's December 18 bow. Generally, advanced ticketing begins no earlier than about six weeks before a film's release.
Fandango and MovieTickets report substantial interest in "Avatar" tickets, though neither online ticketer has specified the level of sales. A MovieTickets spokesman called sales "healthy," with at least some "Avatar" business trickling in on a daily basis.
"New Moon" topped Fandango's latest weekly survey of most-anticipated movies. Some 39 percent of visitors to its site said that, of the films still to be released this year, it's the one they're most looking forward to seeing; 23 percent mentioned "Avatar" and 16 percent cited Roland Emmerich's sci-fi actioner "2012," from Fox.
