BEIJING (Reuters) - The government has banned "unlicensed marches, demonstrations and mass protests" in the strife-hit western Chinese city of Urumqi, the official Xinhua news agency said on Friday.

"Also banned are weapons, knives with restricted uses, and explosives, or use of violence, and disturbances at such events," it quoted a city government spokesman as saying.

Security forces in Urumqi used tear gas earlier in the day to break up fresh protests, as thousands of Han Chinese demanded better security after a scare over alleged attacks with syringes.
