China dismisses Party boss of strife-hit western city
BEIJING |
BEIJING (Reuters) - China dismissed Li Zhi, the Communist Party chief of the strife-hit far-west city of Urumqi on Saturday, the official Xinhua news agency reported, following days of protests that left five people dead.
The brief report gave no reason for Li's sacking. He was the city's top official during deadly ethnic unrest on July 5 that left at least 197 dead, and Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang region, has seen fresh ethnic unrest in recent days.
