SO. ST. PAUL, Minn.--(Business Wire)-- Digital Angel (NASDAQ: DIGA), an advanced technology company in the field of animal identification and emergency identification solutions, announced today that its McMurdo unit has received an order worth £824,000 (approximately $1.35 million at current exchange rates) from its Australian distributor AMI Sales, for the supply of a new 406 MHz EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon), the SMARTFIND A5. This represents the largest order that McMurdo has ever received for EPIRBs. The order coincides with the launch of the new SMARTFIND A5 in Australia by AMI. The A5 SMARTFIND EPIRB has been developed for both the Australian and New Zealand marine markets where national marine rules concerning the carriage of EPIRBs apply. In Australia all vessels - from kayaks to superyachts - must carry a 406 MHz EPIRB when heading more than two miles offshore. The approved A5 SMARTFIND EPIRB is an entry-level product with a price tag to match, which makes it more accessible to a wider range of boat owners. "We are delighted with this initial order for the new SMARTFIND A5," said Joseph J. Grillo, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Angel. "There is substantial demand for this low-cost model in Australia due to the switching off, by the international authorities, of the older and less reliable 121.5 MHz emergency system in February of this year. McMurdo is working closely with AMI, our distributor and approved shore-based maintenance service center for Australia and the Pacific Rim market, to keep pace with demand in this region." The SMARTFIND A5 is of rugged construction and boasts an extra-long battery life of seven years. The SMARTFIND A5 is subscription-free, and costs just A$585 (approximately US$500) including tax. The product will be available from early September 2009.
