International Academy of Design & Technology - Detroit Announces New
Construction Management Degree
Bachelor of Science program teaches students the fundamentals of construction
management while incorporating new trends like 'green design' and
sustainability.

TROY, Mich., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Academy of Design &
Technology (the Academy) - Detroit recently announced the addition of a
Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management & Design (CMD). The new
program will provide training that contains knowledge and skills needed in the
evolving construction industry.

"The economy and the environment are dual factors in the rapid growth of green
construction," says Barbara Marini, CMD Program Chair. "The new CMD degree
takes a holistic approach to bridging the gap between architecture,
construction and design with the goal of preparing students to take on
challenging roles."

The curriculum blends project management, construction processes, and
introductory interior design courses with the technical knowledge and
practical skills required in the construction field. With an increasing focus
on energy-efficient building and reducing community and construction waste,
this new degree comes at an opportune time for both first-time college
students and those looking to change fields or enhance their resumes.

The program focuses on the many facets of the construction industry including
the interior built environment, building systems, community planning, and
global sustainability. Project and construction management are an integral
part of the curriculum. In addition, real-world field experience is
integrated into the curriculum in many courses and students have an
opportunity to learn directly from construction professionals.

"Construction is so much more than a shell," adds Marini. "It's aesthetic and
it's functional. With the help of technology and 3D modeling, students will
see their ideas and work come to life just as they would outside the
classroom."

Industry trends that affect building processes, such as environmental
initiatives, energy consumption and sustainability factors are imbedded across
the curriculum. In addition, "green design" is a directed focus of the
program and can help prepare graduates for the changing construction industry
and building practices.

"According to the most recent research, the value of green building
construction is projected to increase to $60 billion by 2010, while the
overall green building market is likely to more than double from today's
$36-49 billion to $96-140 billion by 2013," says Marini. "The CMD degree can
help prepare Academy graduates to take advantage of possible opportunities
generated by such growth."

The CMD degree is a three year program requiring four classes per term for 15
terms. Classes begin in October and interested students can register on
