CHICAGO--(Business Wire)-- ICAP Ocean Tomo announced today it has been retained to sell a patent portfolio for the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the California Institute of Technology (CHLA/CALTECH). The portfolio contains 19 issued patents and patent applications relating to non-invasive substance detection. The sale of this technology will take place November 30, 2009. The portfolio includes nine patents that can be classified into two distinct technologies: a Non-invasive Blood Glucose Monitor, and the Assessment of the Blood-brain barrier functions and detection of substances. The patented Non-invasive Substance Detection Technology addresses many unmet needs for a large population of patients and healthcare providers. This technology, using analysis of the Raman Spectrum generated by the incidence of a laser beam on the anterior chamber of the eye, determines a person`s blood sugar level. For the first time the patents pertaining to the Blood-brain barrier functions and detection allows the direct measurement of substance levels within the brain and cerebrospinal fluid. "We are excited to have ICAP Ocean Tomo engaged in the process of licensing this unique technology portfolio," said Dr. Mark Borchert, M.D., head of the Division of Ophthalmology at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, director of the Eye Birth Defects Institute and Eye Technology Institute in the Vision Center of Childrens Hospital and associate professor of clinical ophthalmology and neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. "Introduction of a non-invasive glucose detection technology, as seen in this portfolio, offers many advantages to both doctors and patients, and is a significant step forward for the healthcare and biotech industries." Advantages of the non-invasive substance detection technology include: * Diabetes management providing tighter glycemic control without the use of consumable items, providing a better patient compliance rate * Large market potential, with assets covering the use of the invention across diagnostics, drug trials, space exploration and alcohol detection * A non-invasive, non-infectious detection system, allowing for assessment requiring no direct contact with body fluids "The Childrens Hospital/Caltech portfolio has so much market potential," said DJ Nag, Vice President, ICAP Ocean Tomo. "We are excited about the opportunity to broker this sale, providing a great asset to the biotech industry, which has historically been an underserved market."
