IQwind received the award on the basis of its unique variable gearbox design, which can be both retrofitted into existing turbines and utilized as a standard component in newly-manufactured turbines. The high efficiency IQwind technology can reduce the cost of energy (COE) by up to 25% compared to the best existing wind turbines, increasing the overall potential and cost-effectiveness of wind as an alternative renewable energy source. The company has recently signed an agreement with Spain-based Guascor to jointly bring to market products based on the IQgearbox. The first product is a 750KW IQgearbox for the retrofit market planned to be launched next year. A new 2.5MW turbine (IQTurbineTM) based on the IQGear technology is currently in the design phase.
