NEW YORK, Sept 14 (Reuters) - New York State claims it is owed around $1.22 billion in unpaid taxes and interest from bankrupt Lehman Brothers, the largest individual claim to date against the failed bank, according to court documents.

New York claims it is owed the sum for unpaid corporate, withholding and sales taxes dating back to 1994.

New York City has also claimed it has been shortchanged by Lehman to the tune of $627 million in corporate and other taxes, owed from as early as 1996.

Cash-strapped cities and states including New York, the City of Chicago and Long Beach, California have all submitted claims to retrieve money from the estate of Lehman, which collapsed in September 2008. For details, see [ID:nN05587627]
