Cofina opposes merger between Zon and Sonaecom
LISBON, Sept 14 |
LISBON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Portuguese media group Cofina COFI.LS, one of the main shareholders in Zon Multimedia (ZON.LS), said on Monday it would oppose a merger between Zon and Sonaecom (SNC.LS).
"Cofina is against any kind of merger, namely with Sonaecom," said a spokesman for Cofina. "We don't see any reason to change the current strategy of the company."
Sonaecom has said it would like a merger with Zon.
Paulo Azevedo, the chief executive of Sonae (YSO.LS), which controls Sonaecom, was quoted on Saturday in weekly Expresso as saying "for the merger to go ahead it is necessary that Zon's shareholders want it but so far they have said nothing."
Cofina holds 4.91 percent of Zon, making it the sixth largest shareholder in Zon, and it has a seat on Zon's board of directors.
The Cofina spokesman said there was no good reason to change its strategy.
"Zon has met and brought forward its growth targets, namely in its strategy in triple play," he said.
The biggest, single shareholder in Zon is state-owned Caixa Geral de Depositos, which owns 17.66 percent of the telecoms operator. (Reporting by Sergio Goncalves; writing by Axel Bugge)
