ISTANBUL, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Six people suspected of involvement in 2003 al Qaeda suicide bombings that killed dozens at synagogues and an HSBC bank branch were detained on Wednesday, Turkish police said.

The detentions were made in Istanbul, where the bombings occurred, police said in a statement.

Seven militants, including a Syrian al Qaeda member, were sentenced to life in prison for their connection with the 2003 bombings.

Trucks crashed into two synagogues in Istanbul carrying explosives that killed around two dozen people in 2003. Another bombing at an HSBC bank branch in central Istanbul killed another 30 people.

Turkish police carry out routine operations against militant groups in predominantly Muslim Turkey. The six suspects were taken to the state prosecutor for questioning.
