TAIPEI, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Samsung Mobile Display, the world's biggest maker of mobile phone screens, expects the usage of new-generation AM-OLED screens in mobile devices, including cellphones, to grow significantly in coming years.
"It's a growing market," Choi Yun-ho, a senior vice-president at the 50-50 joint venture between Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and Samsung SDI (006400.KS) told Reuters in an interview.
"It is about 1.5 percent this year, and then growing to 10 percent in 2012 and 30 percent in 2015," said Choi, who is in Taipei for Samsung's annual mobile forum slated for Tuesday.
Besides mobile phones, AM-OLED displays would also go into a growing number of digital cameras and low-cost netbook PCs. Unit shipments of mobile devices are expected to rise 4-5 percent annually through 2015, Choi said.
The Korean company is a sector leader in active-matrix OLED displays, which are suitable for high-end mobile phones with various features such as multimedia content. The company competes with Japan's Sharp Corp (6753.T) and TDK Corp (6762.T) and Taiwan's AU Optronics (2409.TW).
With feature-packed mobile devices likely to gain popularity globally in coming years, Samsung Mobile Display plans to hire more people in its R&D department next year, Choi said, but did not provide specific figures.
