Iberian prompt power extends gains on weak winds
* Spain day-ahead 35.65 euros ($52.78)/MWh, up 0.62
* Portugal prompt up 0.69 to 35.84 euros/MWh
MADRID, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Iberian prompt power edged up on Tuesday as supplies of cheap wind power were seen fading further. Producers predicted that wind parks in Spain, the world's third biggest, would generate as little as 2,000 megawatts on Wednesday, down from 3,300 MW on Tuesday afternoon.
Wind power was expected to recover on Thursday, however, which may weigh on day-ahead prices when the Spanish-based Omel exchange next fixes them on Wednesday morning.
In the over-the-counter market, forwards were slightly lower and followed spot prices while bucking a rise by Brent crude LCOc1 to more than $70 a barrel.
Baseload calendar-year 2010 was quoted at 40.90/41.30 euros/MWh, down from trades settled at 41.25 euros/MWh on Monday.
Portuguese-based forwards exchange Omip called for bids for 60 MW for first-quarter delivery in 2010 at its weekly auction on Wednesday, and 40 MW for Q2-10.
Data from the CSN nuclear regulator and national grid operator REE (REE.MC) showed seven of Spain's eight nuclear plants were working normally and generating 6,236 MW in total, or 19.1 percent of demand.
The 1,000-MW Cofrentes nuclear power station is at present refuelling and not due online again until October.
Spain's power stations were meanwhile emitting 10.042 of carbon dioxide per hour.
In other news, Spain's hydropower reserves fell further last week and now stand at 8,252 gigawatt-hours. [ID:LM391746] (Reporting by Martin Roberts; editing by Christopher Johnson)
