TORONTO, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) began restarting an upgrader at its 155,000 barrel-per-day Scotford oil sands upgrader late Tuesday, according to a notice on a community information line.

The restart began at 7 p.m. local time at the upgrader located onsite of the company's 98,000 bpd refinery outside of Edmonton, Alberta. Intermittent flaring was expected to last 12 hours.

Shell is the sole owner of the refinery. Chevron Corp (CVX.N) and Marathon Oil Corp (MRO.N) each have a 20 percent stake in the upgrader, which converts bitumen from the oil sands into refinery-ready synthetic crude oil. (Reporting by Janet McGurty; Editing by John Picinich)
