US says hopes tire dispute does not spark trade war

WASHINGTON, Sept 24 | Thu Sep 24, 2009 11:44am EDT

WASHINGTON, Sept 24 (Reuters) - U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said on Thursday he believed that China and the United States did not want a trade dispute on tires to spark a trade war.

Steinberg made the comments in a speech on U.S.-China relations.

U.S. President Barack Obama recently announced a 35-percent additional "safeguard" tariff on tire imports from China, a move Beijing condemned as protectionism that could undermine a global economic recovery. (Reporting by Tabassum Zakaria)
