WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama will travel to Copenhagen this week to promote Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the White House said on Monday.

Obama will try to get the International Olympic Committee, meeting Friday in Copenhagen, to endorse the effort by his hometown of Chicago to hold the games there, White House spokesman Bill Burton said.

The White House earlier had not indicated whether Obama would attend the IOC meeting but had planned to send first lady Michelle Obama.

Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo also are in the running to host the Olympics.
