AMSTERDAM, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Dutch company Philips Electronics (PHG.AS) (PHG.N) said on Tuesday it would recall 5,400 defibrillators as they may show a problem in one of the memory chips.

"Philips has sold over 650,000 defibrillators so the recall represents less than 1 percent," a spokesman said.

The recall of the defibrillators was expected to affect customers mainly in the United States, but the spokesman said the defibrillator being recalled was sold worldwide.

Defibrillators are used by healthcare workers to help restart a patient's heart.

Philips is the world's biggest lighting maker, a top three hospital equipment maker and Europe's biggest consumer electronics producer. (Reporting by Harro ten Wolde; Editing by Dan Lalor) (harro.tenwolde@reuters.com; Reuters Messaging: harro.tenwolde.reuters.com@reuters.net; +31 20 504 5017))
