LONDON, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Sterling extended gains on Wednesday, climbing 1 percent on the day against the dollar, which suffered broadly due to losses against the euro in the aftermath of a European Central Bank cash tender offer.

Sterling GBP=D4 rose to the day's high of $1.6119, pulling further away from a four-month low of $1.5770 hit earlier in the week.

The pound was also boosted after a jump in UK consumer sentiment prompted short covering in the currency.
