ALEXANDRIA, VA, Oct 05 (MARKET WIRE) --
The major U.S. aggregates producers that comprise the National Stone,
Sand and Gravel Association have joined forces to develop dynamic new
recruiting materials to attract new graduates to its jobs.
The aggregates industry is looking for educated and skilled workers to
fill a range of positions -- from office clerk to engineer, from truck
driver to CFO. The industry has openings at all levels of responsibility
at locations in all 50 states and wants to attract qualified high school
and college graduates.
An informative Web site, http://www.foundation4thefuture.com, features a
video designed for high school and college career guidance counselors who,
in turn, will share it with students -- the industry's prospective
employees. Counselors can access for free a streaming 7-minute video and
obtain collateral materials for their offices. The video and materials
describe the industry and highlight the types of workers it needs. They
introduce the concept of aggregates and provide an overview of the many
types of companies that mine for stone, sand and gravel. These are
materials that make a variety of useful products for roads, houses,
bridges and buildings, as well as consumer products, that are essential
for the quality of life for all Americans. As the backbone of
construction, aggregates industry growth has been steady and that growth
translates into future jobs.
The home page links to a list of example job titles with brief
descriptions that demonstrate the range and breadth of opportunities.
Beyond the specialty work of mining engineering and construction,
aggregates company operations mirror those of any company -- with human
resources, finance and accounting, safety and health, IT and other office
and management functions. Many of the more physical jobs that involve
working outdoors some of the time include surveying and engineering,
operating heavy equipment, driving trucks, managing and supervising
specific projects and sites. Most require job training, but not
necessarily a college degree.
Based near the nation's capital, NSSGA is the world's largest mining
association by product volume. Its member companies represent more than
90 percent of the crushed stone and 70 percent of the sand and gravel
produced annually in the U.S. and approximately 118,000 working men and
women in the aggregates industry. During 2008, a total of about 2.34
billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel, valued at $19.4
billion, were produced and sold in the United States.
