Security Interoperability for the Utility Industry Will Be Critical for Smart
Grid Implementation Says GarrettCom's Madren

FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- GarrettCom, Inc., will participate in
the Lemnos Interoperable Security Program's demonstration in the Security
X-Pod at ISA Expo this week in Houston, Texas. The event will demonstrate the
interoperability of a new security framework for the power utility industry,
and will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Security
and interoperability will be critical components of the Smart Grid.

GarrettCom will supply Magnum DX Industrial Routers, which are used in power
utility substations for local networking and secure remote access. GarrettCom
is a leading supplier of networking solutions for challenging industrial
environments, and provides the CrossBow Secure Access Manager for NERC CIP
security compliance in Smart Grid substations.

EnerNex Corporation, an electric power research and consulting firm, was
awarded a 2-year grant from the DoE to develop the consortium comprising
Sandia National Labs, Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL), the Tennessee Valley
Authority (TVA), and EnerNex. A part of the National SCADA Testbed, the
Lemnos objective is to build an open-source, IP based interoperability
framework. GarrettCom is one of four outside vendors that participated in
Phase III, which was conducted at TVA Labs in July, and successfully
demonstrated interoperability using the protocols IPSec and Syslog.

"Security is a hallmark of the Smart Grid project, and is essential to
success, but secure solutions that cannot interoperate will defeat the
project," said Frank Madren, GarrettCom President. "We are participating
because networking security and interoperability are things in which we
believe."

"Lemnos requires a collaboration of government and industry to be successful,"
said Brian Smith, Utility Communications Systems Engineer, EnerNex.
"GarrettCom's participation helped us prove the concept and move the project
forward."
