BASILDON, UNITED KINGDOM, Oct 05 (MARKET WIRE) --
The 7.6-magnitude quake occurred off West Sumatra Province, 30 miles
offshore from the city of Padang on 30 September 2009. The earthquake
struck at 1716 local time (1016 GMT), some 85km (55 miles) under the sea,
north-west of Padang, the US Geological Survey said.
On Thursday 1 October at 0852 local time (0152 GMT) a second quake
measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale occurred in Jambi Province close to
Padang.
Early reports indicate that there have been several hundred casualties
but we are not aware of any British nationals among this number although
around 150,000 British nationals visit Indonesia every year (Source:
Office for National Statistics (ONS)).
AA travel insurance recommends that travellers follow the FCO advice when
travelling to Indonesia, Samoa and American Samoa. If you are already in
one of the affected areas, you should register with the nearest consulate
or high commission or online using the LOCATE portal
www.locate.fco.gov.uk/locateportal.
People currently in the Padang area need to be wary of the risk from
aftershocks and debris falling from damaged buildings.
There has been substantial damage to the infrastructure, with hospitals
and telephone links seriously affected. The devastation is really very
serious. Many buildings have been destroyed including some hotels where
it's likely that foreign nationals might have been staying. Padang
Airport is open but there is likely to be substantial disruption to
scheduled services for some time.
Humanitarian experts from the Department for International Development
(DFID) are travelling to Indonesia on Friday 2 October 2009 to assess the
scale of the damage caused by the recent earthquake. Working closely with
the other international relief organisations and the Government, they
will help organise the combined relief effort and asses what additional
international support is needed.
