BERKELEY, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
The battle against University of California President Mark Yudof`s furloughs,
tuition hikes, research and public service cuts and huge bonuses to already
highly paid administrative staff intensified today as University Professional
and Technical Employees (UPTE-CWA local 9119) http://www.upte.org/ launched a
new advertising, public relations and interactive informational campaign.

"We`re posing the core question to UC students, parents, staff and alumni,"
explained Jelger Kalmijn, UPTE-CWA`s system-wide president. "Does UC belong to
the people of California, who support its 140-year tradition of people and
public service? Or does it belong to Mark Yudof and a small group of
unaccountable executives who are determined to transform UC into just one more
bloated, mismanaged corporation?"

Kalmijn said full-page print ads will begin with the October 9th issue of in the
Chronicle of Higher Education. Banner ads on the Chronicle`s Web site
(www.chronicle.com) will begin today, October 5th.

Display ads will also begin appearing today at the Sacramento and Oakland
Airports. The first billboard, along I-880/Nimitz Freeway south of I-980, will
go up on November 2nd.

Today also marks the launch of the campaign`s microsite at
www.peopleorprofit.org. The site contains a petition urging Yudof to change
course or resign.

"We want President Yudof to understand that we are committed to this campaign
for as long as it takes to convince him to either rescind the budget cuts and
plug the $827 million shortfall with rainy day funds and salary cuts for his
overpaid administrative staff-or resign. Those are his choices," said Kalmijn.
