Europe shares briefly extend gains after ISM data

LONDON Oct 5 (Reuters) - European shares briefly extended gains on Monday after U.S. ISM non-manufacturing data came in better than forecast.

The U.S. service sector expanded in September at a faster pace than expected, with the Institute for Supply Management's services index coming in at 50.9, compared to a forecast of 50.

The FTSEurofirst 300 initially spiked higher to a session high of 970.39 points, before retreating to 967.93 by 1506 GMT.

Telecoms companies were among the top gainers, with Telefonica (TEF.MC), BT Group (BT.L) and France Telecom (FTE.PA) gaining 0.5-2.7 percent.

Around Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 .FTSE, France's CAC .FCHI and Germany's DAX .GDAXI were down 0.2 to up 0.1 percent. (Reporting by Simon Falush)
