* British business helped by product launches

(Adds details)

LONDON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - British soap and shampoo maker PZ Cussons (PZC.L) said it had traded well in the first-quarter, helped by a strong performance from its UK business, and that group profitability was ahead of the same period last year.

The company, which operates mainly in Britain, Nigeria, Australia and Indonesia, on Monday said its performance in Nigeria in the four months to Oct. 4 had been strong, boosted by a stable political environment and positive economic growth.

The maker of Imperial Leather soap also said new product launches had helped its British business deliver strong growth and that its other units had performed well during the period.

"Overall, we remain cautiously optimistic for the full year outturn despite the global economic picture remaining uncertain," the company said in a statement.
