WASHINGTON Oct 7 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama discussed with top lawmakers on Wednesday the possibility of extending social safety net programs that are close to expiring and the need for job creation, a U.S. official said.

Obama met at the White House with House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"During the meeting they discussed the success of the Recovery Act, the possibility of extending programs that will soon expire and the many ways that we can work together to continue to save and create jobs in the future," the U.S. official said. (Reporting by Caren Bohan; Editing by Eric Walsh)
