SYDNEY (Reuters) - Authorities in the pacific island of New Caledonia are evacuating people from the island's eastern shore and from the nearby Loyalty Islands to higher ground after a tsunami warning triggered by an earthquake near Vanuatu.

A police spokesman in the French territory's capital of Noumea said they expect waves to hit the coastline at 11:15 a.m. (0015 GMT). (Reporting by Cecile Lefort)
