Companies Earn First Prize in Information Security Category for Joint Project to Secure Medical Data VANCOUVER--(Business Wire)-- Layer 7 Technologies, the leader in SOA security and governance, today announced that the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) won the 2009 TechForum Best Practice Awards for Information Security based on its use of Layer 7 technology. The Best Practice Awards program promotes excellence in the business management of technology, honoring real-world deployments that are innovative, easily replicated and proven to be effective. UCMC and Layer 7 won for their joint project to secure and govern the medical center`s services and medical data while enforcing stringent HIPAA compliance. UCMC`s Department of Medicine selected Layer 7`s SecureSpan XML Gateway appliance to automate the querying, collation and anonymization of clinical data (i.e. Lab, Pathology and Radiology results). Once deployed, SecureSpan enabled UCMC to increase staff efficiency and reduce its data entry error rate by 30-40 percent while simultaneously maintaining strict security and management measures and HIPAA compliance for sensitive patient records. "Layer 7 helped us achieve Best Practices in patient care and medical research," said Michael Sorensen, executive director and chief technology officer at UCMC. "Using the SecureSpan Gateway we were able to improve operational efficiencies while maintaining stringent security and management measures for sensitive patient records." "The UCMC project is a great case study," said Scott Morrison, chief architect and vice president, Engineering at Layer 7 Technologies. "We are going to see more and more hospitals and providers moving to electronic health record systems and comprehensive security and compliance will remain an absolute necessity." TechForum`s Best Practice Awards program was founded in 1996 by Executive Director Priscilla Tate. Judges for the Best Practice Awards include practicing Fortune 1000 technology managers. The Best Practice Awards will be presented at Technology Managers Forum`s 16th annual conference, "TechForum`s Security Forum: Securing the Virtual Enterprise," held October 8 in downtown Manhattan. "There were a number of excellent entries this year," said Tate. "The judges felt that the Layer 7/UCMC project demonstrated a particularly well-executed, timely and sophisticated use of SOA architecture that would be of value to many other large enterprises and healthcare providers."
