Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission Announces Free Seminars on Avoiding
Predatory Lending, Foreclosure Scams, Other Homebuyer Pitfalls
HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Human
Relations Commission will co-sponsor a series of free seminars in Philadelphia
to teach potential homebuyers, real estate professionals and housing
counselors how to avoid predatory lending and other pitfalls of home-buying.
"Becoming a homeowner can also mean becoming a target for scams, fraud and
unfair lending," said commission chairperson Stephen Glassman. "But by
learning what to look for, you can take the target off your back. Our mission
is to eliminate the kind of deceptive, unfair practices that contributed to
today's economic crisis, and make sure that no one has to face illegal
discrimination when buying a home in Pennsylvania."
The two- and three-day, hands-on courses will be held in conjunction with the
National Fair Housing Training Academy and the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development as part of a joint effort to help consumers avoid illegal
discrimination in housing.
Topics will include avoiding deceptive and fraudulent practices and when
buying a home, legal protections for homebuyers under Pa. and federal law,
understanding the mortgage process, identifying risks and benefits of various
mortgages budgeting and more.
The courses will be held in late October, late November and early December.
Courses are free, but registration is required. Translators are available
upon request for Spanish and American Sign Language.
