Mexico peso, stocks post modest gains

MEXICO CITY Oct 9 (Reuters) - Mexico's peso firmed slightly on Friday and stocks also rose, driven by blue chips America Movil and Wal-Mart de Mexico (Walmex).

The peso MXN= MEX01 firmed 0.17 percent to 13.22 per U.S. dollar as the IPC stock index .MXX added 0.40 percent to rise above the 30,000-point mark.

America Movil (AMXL.MX), the country's leading cell phone operator, added 0.29 percent to 31.08 pesos.

Top retailer Walmex (WALMEXV.MX) gained 0.04 percent to 47.80 pesos. The company posted an 18 percent rise in third-quarter net earnings, above market expectations, after Thursday's close. Santander raised its rating on Walmex to "buy" from "hold" after the results.

In debt trading, the government's benchmark 10-year peso bond MX10YT=RR bid up 3 basis points to yield 7.79 percent. (Reporting by Cyntia Barrera Diaz; Editing by James Dalgleish)
