BOSTON, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Dendreon Corp (DNDN.O) has attracted two leading industry experts to its board, giving it additional manufacturing and marketing strength as it gears up for the potential approval and launch of its cancer vaccine.
In filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission released on Friday, Dendreon said it had recruited Ian Clark, the chief executive of Roche Holding AG's (ROG.VX) Genentech unit, and Pedro Granadillo, formerly head of manufacturing at Eli Lilly & Co (LLY.N), to its board.
"These are two heavyweight gunslingers," said WBB Securities analyst Steve Brozak.
Each director was awarded 4,994 Dendreon shares.
Roche is one of the world's top cancer companies -- and a potential bidder for a company such as Dendreon, whose shares have risen more than 10-fold since the release of data in April that showed Provenge prolonged the lives of prostate cancer patients by about four months.
The addition of Clark to the company's board could place Roche in pole position in the event of a bidding war for Seattle-based Dendreon.
Dendreon plans to seek U.S. approval for Provenge in November. The company has said it would be able to make enough Provenge to generate potential sales of $60 million to $125 million in the second half of next year.
Dendreon said it would steadily ramp up production until full capacity is achieved by late 2011 at plants in New Jersey, Atlanta and Los Angeles -- enough to support potential annual sales of $1.2 billion to $2.5 billion.
Dendreon's shares rose 4 percent to $28.58 in afternoon trading on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Toni Clarke, editing by Maureen Bavdek and Gerald E. McCormick)
